About this game

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door sends Mario after a legendary treasure with a map from Princess Peach. Exploration uses the properties of his paper body: folding into a plane lets him cross gaps, while partners contribute their own abilities. Koops, for example, can send his shell toward a distant switch. Enemy encounters move the action onto a theater stage for turn-based command battles with timing-based attacks. Badges add moves or strengthen abilities, but their combined cost must fit Mario's BP limit. Collecting Crystal Stars unlocks special moves. This version revises the graphics and soundtrack, and adds updated quick-travel pipes and a Partner Ring for switching companions.

Collected in series

Super Mario is Nintendo’s platform-adventure series, first launched in 1985. Mario and his friends leap through the Mushroom Kingdom and beyond, exploring colorful worlds and tackling playful challenges. Mushrooms, coins, pipes and surprising power-ups make every adventure full of discoveries.

9.2 / 10Nintendo Switch

A strong design match for players who enjoy turn-based planning with a hands-on timing element.

The BP limit should make badge selection a meaningful exercise in choosing priorities rather than equipping everything. Partners also contribute outside combat, giving players a reason to think about their abilities while exploring.

Strengths

  • Badge costs should encourage deliberate choices about which moves and enhancements to bring.
  • Field abilities give companions a practical role in exploration as well as combat.

Weaknesses

  • Players who prefer battles handled entirely through menu choices may find the timing-based attacks an additional execution demand.

Who it is for: Players who like turn-based decisions, timed inputs and exploration built around character abilities.
