About this game

Super Mario RPG revisits Mario's original role-playing adventure. Travel with his companions to recover the Star Road's scattered pieces, using jumps to explore the field and reach treasure. Battles proceed in turns, but choosing an attack is only part of the action: pressing a button at the right moment increases damage, while timed defence reduces the damage you take. Successful Action Commands build a gauge for a Triple Move, and the move changes with the characters in your party. Levelling unlocks additional special moves, while weapons and armour adjust combat statistics. The Switch version also lets you change between Normal and Breezy difficulty during play and choose either newly arranged music or the original soundtrack.

Collected in series

Super Mario is Nintendo’s platform-adventure series, first launched in 1985. Mario and his friends leap through the Mushroom Kingdom and beyond, exploring colorful worlds and tackling playful challenges. Mushrooms, coins, pipes and surprising power-ups make every adventure full of discoveries.

8.6 / 10Nintendo Switch

A natural fit for players who want hands-on timing within a turn-based adventure.

Timed attacks and defence should keep individual turns engaging for players who like a physical action alongside menu decisions. Party-dependent Triple Moves and newly learned specials give that timing a wider context as the group develops.

Strengths

  • Successful timing contributes both immediate combat benefits and progress towards a party move.
  • Switchable difficulty offers room to adjust combat demands without abandoning the adventure.

Weaknesses

  • Players seeking exclusively menu-based combat may find the recurring timing element less appealing.

Who it is for: Players who enjoy party growth and exploration but also want to participate directly in attacks and defence.
