Overview

What this platform is

The Family Computer, commonly called Famicom, first launched in Japan on July 15, 1983. This cartridge-based Nintendo console brought a broad range of action, puzzle and sports games to home televisions. The NES belongs to the same generation but uses different hardware styling and cartridge connections.

Key features

The original red-and-white machine has two attached controllers that fit into holders on its sides. A directional pad and A/B buttons provide straightforward controls. The second controller includes a microphone, while the first has Start and Select. Supported games offer two-player action and some use additional accessories.

What to know before playing

Original Japanese units use RF television output, while later revisions can have different connections. Check the exact model, video standard and power supply before connecting a display. Famicom and NES cartridges are not directly interchangeable; Disk System titles need their own hardware. Saving also depends on the individual game.
