About this game

Shin Megami Tensei V casts you as a student who becomes the Nahobino in Da'at, a ruined counterpart of Tokyo. Explore its demon-inhabited landscape and build a party by persuading potential enemies to join you. Battles use commands, with weakness hits granting extra actions; enemies can turn that same rule against your party. Party development extends beyond recruitment. Fuse demons into new allies and choose inherited skills, within the system's exceptions, to shape what they can do. A full Magatsuhi gauge enables special skills, adding another timing decision in battle. Exploration also provides Glory for learning Miracles, connecting your discoveries to changes in exploration and development systems.

Collected in series

Shin Megami Tensei is Atlus’s RPG series about supernatural upheaval and competing visions of the future. Demon negotiation and fusion shape your party, while exploration, difficult choices and weakness-based battles drive its mainline adventures.

8.5 / 10Nintendo Switch

A compelling premise for players who enjoy designing a party around exploitable weaknesses.

Extra actions make matching attacks to weaknesses consequential, while reciprocal enemy advantages put pressure on party composition. Recruitment and inherited fusion skills can reward players who enjoy revising their team rather than relying on a fixed setup.

Strengths

  • Weakness-driven extra actions can make attack selection and defensive preparation matter together.
  • Negotiation and skill inheritance give party-building different kinds of decisions.

Weaknesses

  • The enemy's ability to exploit weaknesses may feel punishing if you prefer forgiving battles with a largely unchanged party.

Who it is for: Players who enjoy recruiting unusual allies, testing skill combinations and reconsidering a party after identifying its vulnerabilities.

Play notes: Hard must be selected when starting the game; switching away from it prevents returning to Hard during that playthrough.

Switching between Casual and Normal offers flexibility, but the one-way departure from Hard makes that setting a more consequential choice.
