About this game

Vaan and Princess Ashe's intersecting journeys lead through occupied Ivalice. Enemies are encountered directly on the field, while Gambits let you give party members instructions they follow automatically. Character development uses pairs of jobs, which determine available equipment, magic and techniques; building the party therefore involves both selecting capabilities and deciding how they are used. The Switch edition lets you reset jobs by speaking to Montblanc in Rabanastre and keep three Gambit sets for different situations. Bounty hunts provide additional targets beyond the main journey. An adjustable high-speed mode changes the game's running pace, and the soundtrack can be switched between original, re-orchestrated and OST versions.

Collected in series

Final Fantasy is a role-playing series created by Square in 1987, built around fantastical journeys, memorable characters and growing stronger together. Most numbered entries introduce their own world and cast. From crystals and magic to cities where machinery meets fantasy, each adventure offers a different view.

9.2 / 10Nintendo Switch

Best matched to players who enjoy designing a party's behavior as much as choosing its abilities.

Gambits can turn combat preparation into an exercise in specifying how your party should respond, with paired jobs supplying the available tools. Job resets and saved instruction sets should encourage players who prefer revising a strategy to committing permanently to an early plan.

Strengths

  • Job resets give experimental party builders a practical way to revisit earlier choices.
  • Saved Gambit sets can support distinct plans without rebuilding every instruction for each situation.

Weaknesses

  • Players who dislike configuring automated behavior may find the planning behind Gambits less appealing than direct command selection.

Who it is for: RPG players who like complementary party roles, configurable automation and optional combat objectives.

Play notes: Autosave keeps one record and overwrites it whenever another autosave occurs.
