About this game
After Earth is destroyed by an interstellar war, a small group of survivors aboard the White Whale crash-lands on Mira. As a BLADE member, the player maps unfamiliar regions, gathers resources and searches for other survivors while helping New Los Angeles establish a future. Companions offer different combat and support abilities, with equipment and weapons shaping their roles. Earning a Skell licence opens another scale of travel and combat through customisable giant machines. Exploration is about learning an alien environment and gradually changing how it can be crossed.
Collected in series
Xenoblade Chronicles is a role-playing series of immense landscapes, close-knit parties and conflicts that reach beyond what its heroes first understand. You explore unfamiliar worlds and coordinate real-time battles through roles, positioning and Arts. Long journeys give the companions time to grow, while the scenery keeps suggesting another place to visit.

Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition
Exploration and character building give this large world purpose, despite a slow introduction.
The world is compelling because discovering it changes what the party can do next. Surveying an area and extending a resource network give exploration practical consequences, while a new combat build provides reasons to return to threatening places. Earning a giant machine then changes the relationship to distance, turning previously imposing terrain into another kind of possibility. That gradual widening of freedom is more convincing than the sheer size of the map. Getting there takes time. Tutorial-heavy opening hours and the work of preparing a strong party can slow the sense of discovery, while a quiet player character does not always provide a satisfying centre for the surrounding drama. Players who enjoy developing systems alongside their knowledge of a world will find a rich journey, provided they accept its demanding introduction.
Strengths
- Exploration, resource networks and party builds support one another.
Weaknesses
- A tutorial-heavy opening and time-consuming preparation slow the journey.
Who it is for: RPG players who enjoy earning freedom through exploration and character systems.
