About this game

Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition follows an expedition across the alien planet Mira. Working with companions in BLADE, you prepare equipment and accept residents' requests in NLA before heading into the wilderness. Dangerous areas leave a choice between finding a safer route and attempting a direct breakthrough, while installed data probes reveal more information on the world map. Battles involve selecting Arts, the game's special attacks and skills. Progress with BLADE eventually earns permission to pilot a Skell, a giant machine used against enormous creatures that also provides flight. Oceans, grasslands, mountains and jungles form the setting for this progression from ground-level exploration to airborne travel.

Collected in series

Xenoblade Chronicles is a role-playing series of immense landscapes, close-knit parties and conflicts that reach beyond what its heroes first understand. You explore unfamiliar worlds and coordinate real-time battles through roles, positioning and Arts. Long journeys give the companions time to grow, while the scenery keeps suggesting another place to visit.

8.9 / 10Nintendo Switch

An exploration-led RPG for players who enjoy building toward a new way to cross an alien world.

Preparing in NLA and deciding how to handle dangerous terrain should give expeditions a deliberate character. Survey probes and eventual Skell access may especially suit players who want exploration to produce visible changes in their options.

Strengths

  • Probe installation turns surveying into a concrete source of map information.
  • Earning a Skell offers a clear objective for players motivated by giant-machine combat and flight.

Weaknesses

  • The initial requirement to earn Skell permission may disappoint players seeking mech piloting from the outset.

Who it is for: Players drawn to planning expeditions, choosing combat Arts and gradually expanding their traversal options.

Play notes: Permission to pilot a Skell must be earned through BLADE progression.

NLA preparation and the later Skell milestone suggest a structure better matched to players who enjoy building up an expedition than those focused only on immediate mech action.
