About this game

In Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma, you take up the Earth Dancer's sacred treasures to fight the corruption spreading across Azuma. Dance has uses beyond battle: the drum dance promotes crop growth. Japanese-inspired seasonal villages form the setting for an adventure that combines combat, farming and relationships. Village rebuilding extends your decisions beyond a single field. Arrange farmland, buildings and waterways within development areas; placed buildings and decorations can also affect your character's statistics. Residents can handle crop care and harvesting, while completing village missions raises village levels and opens up further building types. Friends can join you in battle, and either protagonist can pursue romance with eligible characters.

8.3 / 10Nintendo Switch

A promising fit for players who want village planning and farming to matter alongside action RPG combat.

Buildings that affect character statistics give village layout a purpose beyond decoration, while residents' farm work can leave more room for adventuring. This combination is most appealing if developing a settlement interests you as much as fighting monsters.

Strengths

  • Village placement connects construction choices with character development.
  • Delegating crop care and harvesting offers a way to shift attention toward adventure.

Weaknesses

  • Players seeking an exclusively combat-focused RPG may find village missions and building development outside their main interests.

Who it is for: Players who enjoy combining action combat with farm planning, settlement growth and character relationships.

Play notes: Mouse village-building requires the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition; owners of the Nintendo Switch version need its optional Upgrade Pack to use that feature on Switch 2.
