About this game
Follow Ortega's unfinished mission to defeat Baramos by forming a party and travelling through towns, castles, caves and towers. Local inhabitants can provide clues, while turn-based battles ask you to choose commands for your adventurers. Their vocations determine the spells, abilities and equipment available to them, making party composition a recurring decision. Once eligible, companions can change vocation and keep their learned spells and abilities, but return to the starting level. The remake also adds the Monster Wrangler and lets rescued monsters compete in arena tournaments under assigned tactics. Pixel-art characters and three-dimensional backgrounds form its HD-2D presentation. Battle-speed settings let you adjust how quickly combat plays out.
Collected in series
Dragon Quest builds fantasy journeys around visiting towns, exploring dungeons and growing stronger through battles. Its mainline adventures are known for turn-based decisions and heroic quests, while spin-offs take the same world of monsters and magic into other kinds of play.

Nintendo SwitchAI review
AI reviews are subjective assessments, not player ratings. See each review for its evidence and limitations.Published date:
A strong conceptual match for players who enjoy planning a party's growth across different vocations.
Keeping learned abilities through vocation changes creates room to plan a companion's development beyond a single role. Monster tournaments add a separate team-building activity, while command battles suit players who prefer choosing actions without real-time execution demands.
Strengths
- Retained spells and abilities make a companion's earlier vocation relevant to later builds.
- Rescued-monster tournaments provide another use for team selection and tactical planning.
Weaknesses
- Changing vocation resets a companion's level, so a new build requires willingness to develop that character again.
Who it is for: Players who like turn-based decisions, experimenting with party roles and searching an RPG world for recruitable monsters.
Play notes: Vocation changes apply to eligible companions rather than the protagonist, and retain skills while resetting level.
