About this game

Contra: Operation Galuga rebuilds the original Contra around running, jumping and shooting through eight stages. Weapon pickups increase your firepower when stacked, while Overload lets you sacrifice a weapon for a special effect. A machine gun can become a protective barrier, giving weapon management a role alongside movement and shooting. Story Mode carries the adventure for a solo player or a pair. Arcade Mode removes cutscenes and dialogue and supports cooperation for up to four players, while Challenge Mode introduces restrictions such as limited ammunition. Selectable difficulty settings provide another way to configure the action. Updated graphics and sound accompany this reworking of the original game.

7.5 / 10Nintendo Switch

A promising fit for players who want weapon decisions within stage-based run-and-gun action.

Overload can make a useful weapon both an asset to preserve and a resource to spend. The separation between Story and Arcade may also suit players who want to choose how much narrative interrupts their action.

Strengths

  • Sacrificing a weapon for an effect can create a meaningful alternative to simply keeping its firepower.
  • Separate Story and Arcade formats can accommodate different preferences for narrative presentation.

Who it is for: Players drawn to running-and-shooting stages, cooperative action and challenges that change weapon constraints.

Play notes: For a group larger than two, Arcade is the relevant cooperative mode; Story has a lower player limit.

Arcade's removal of dialogue may appeal when uninterrupted stage action matters more than following the story.
