About this game

Contra Anniversary Collection gathers arcade and home-console games built around moving through stages, collecting power-ups and shooting enemies and bosses. The original arcade Contra changes between horizontal, vertical and pseudo-3D sections. Contra III adds wall and ceiling grabbing, weapon switching and overhead stages where rotating the background changes how you explore. Contra: Hard Corps offers characters with different abilities and decisions that lead to different stages. The lineup also includes regional versions, such as the North American and Japanese home versions of Contra and the European Contra III counterpart, Super Probotector: Alien Rebels. Away from the action, a digital Bonus Book provides development documents, sketches, a chronology and an interview.

8.1 / 10Nintendo Switch

A collection for players who want to compare classic run-and-gun rules, stage ideas and regional variations.

Changes in viewpoint, climbing and weapon handling can give the included games different demands despite their shared shooting foundation. Hard Corps' branches and the Bonus Book also offer reasons to engage with the collection as both playable action and series history.

Strengths

  • Distinct movement and stage systems can make comparing the included games more interesting than repeating one ruleset.
  • The Bonus Book gives players interested in the series a way to connect play with development material.

Weaknesses

  • Regional versions create some lineup overlap, which may matter to players seeking only entirely different games.

Who it is for: Players interested in classic action, comparing arcade and console design, or reading development material alongside the games.

Play notes: Supported multiplayer requires a compatible controller for each player.
