About this game

Mysterious islands have appeared near Kurken Island, and Ryza sets out to investigate the threat to her home. You control her through a recurring cycle of exploring, gathering ingredients, synthesizing items and fighting enemies. Normal attacks build AP in battle, while alchemy turns the ingredients gathered on your travels into new items. Secret Keys connect these activities. Create them at landmarks or from enemies during combat, then choose where to apply their particular effects. A key suited to synthesis can raise a recipe's level when its conditions are met, adding effects to the finished item. Other effects serve combat, exploration or gathering. Their uses are limited, so the keys you obtain and where you spend them become part of preparing for the next stretch of adventure.

Collected in series

Atelier is an RPG series where gathering ingredients and making useful items are central to the adventure. A better recipe can prepare you for the next outing, while friendships and each alchemist’s goals give you reasons to return to the workshop.

8.5 / 10Nintendo Switch

A good fit for players who want crafting decisions to carry into exploration and combat.

Because keys serve several activities, finding one can prompt a decision about where its effect matters most. The gathering-and-synthesis loop should particularly suit players who enjoy preparing tools for an adventure as much as fighting through it.

Strengths

  • Keys link field discoveries to practical decisions in synthesis and battle.
  • Recipe conditions give players who enjoy crafting a concrete reason to compare key effects.

Weaknesses

  • Players mainly interested in fighting may find limited-use key management an additional demand on their attention.

Who it is for: Players who enjoy ingredient gathering, conditional crafting bonuses and deciding how to use consumable resources.

Play notes: Secret Keys disappear after their uses run out.
