About this game

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 follows Rex and Pyra in search of Elysium, across a world where nations stand on immense living Titans above a sea of clouds. In battle, Drivers receive weapons and powers from Blade partners. Changing the active Blade changes the abilities available to the Driver, with offensive, healing and defensive roles informing the choice. Combat develops through connected actions. Auto-attacks make Driver Arts available; using those Arts builds the gauge for Blade Specials. Linking Specials within a time window produces stronger combos. Alongside following the journey, the player therefore manages which partner to call on and when to turn a charged ability into the next step of an attack sequence.

Collected in series

Xenoblade Chronicles is a role-playing series of immense landscapes, close-knit parties and conflicts that reach beyond what its heroes first understand. You explore unfamiliar worlds and coordinate real-time battles through roles, positioning and Arts. Long journeys give the companions time to grow, while the scenery keeps suggesting another place to visit.

8.1 / 10Nintendo Switch

A considered match for RPG players who enjoy building attacks through linked systems.

The progression from auto-attacks to Arts and Specials could reward understanding how one action prepares the next. Blade switching adds role decisions, making the design more appealing if managing a combat sequence interests you as much as following Rex and Pyra's destination.

Strengths

  • Offensive, healing and defensive Blade roles give partner switching a tactical purpose.
  • The charging relationships offer a clear structure for planning toward linked Specials.

Weaknesses

  • Players seeking immediate access to their biggest attacks may find the required charging sequence less direct.

Who it is for: RPG players interested in partner roles, timed attack combinations and a journey across unusual inhabited landscapes.

Play notes: The base game and Expansion Pass are separate products; additional pass content is outside this base-game overview.
