About this game
SteamWorld Dig follows Rusty, a mining robot exploring beneath a Western-inspired steampunk town. You carve a route through the ground rather than simply following an existing corridor, collecting minerals and dealing with enemies and environmental hazards. Bring the minerals back to the surface, sell them and spend the money on equipment upgrades. That digging-and-upgrading loop is set within randomized mining areas, alongside predesigned puzzle caves. Your route choices shape the excavation, while the caves provide authored problems within the wider exploration. The Nintendo Switch edition supports TV, tabletop and handheld play, so the same mining adventure can be approached in those different play modes.
Collected in series
SteamWorld connects very different games through a world of steam-powered robots. Its branches range from underground mining and tactical shootouts to card battles and town building, each giving those mechanical characters a different kind of adventure.

Nintendo SwitchAI review
AI reviews are subjective assessments, not player ratings. See each review for its evidence and limitations.Published date:
A clear fit for players who like turning exploration rewards into the means to keep digging.
Selling minerals and buying upgrades creates a direct link between a mining trip and the next stage of exploration. Choosing your own tunnels, with fixed puzzle caves alongside randomized areas, suggests a useful balance between route-making and authored problems.
Strengths
- Mineral sales turn exploration finds into a concrete equipment goal.
- Free digging and designed caves offer different kinds of spatial decisions.
Weaknesses
- The recurring return-and-sell loop may feel repetitive to players who want continuous forward movement.
Who it is for: Players who enjoy shaping a route, gathering resources and reinvesting them in exploration equipment.
