About this game

Hollow Knight sends the Knight into an underground kingdom of winding caves, ruined cities and strange inhabitants. You fight creatures, navigate traps and decide which routes and opponents to tackle across the connected world. Progression brings new spells and movement abilities, while equippable Charms provide additional powers to shape your approach. Navigation is part of the adventure. Compasses, quills, maps and pins can be bought to help you understand the landscape. Hand-drawn environments, frame-by-frame character animation and Christopher Larkin's score accompany the journey. The included Hidden Dreams, The Grimm Troupe, Lifeblood and Godmaster content packs are also part of both console editions.

9.4 / 10Nintendo Switch

A promising fit for explorers who enjoy choosing a route and developing the abilities to follow it.

Route choice, expanding abilities and Charms could make exploration feel like a succession of personal decisions. Purchasing navigation tools also asks players to take an active interest in understanding the kingdom, which may be less appealing to those who want a tightly directed journey.

Strengths

  • Movement upgrades and Charm choices offer scope to experiment with approaches to exploration and encounters.
  • Hand-drawn spaces and the score could give discoveries a consistent sense of place.

Weaknesses

  • Choosing routes through connected areas may frustrate players who prefer linear direction.

Who it is for: Players interested in exploratory action, movement challenges and learning their way around a connected world.

Play notes: Maps, compasses, quills and pins are purchased during the adventure.
