About this game

DayZ: Cool Edition makes staying alive your ongoing objective. Search the wasteland for food, tools and equipment, monitor hunger, temperature and illness, and build a fire to cook what you find. Other survivors can become allies or threats, so deciding whom to approach is part of survival itself. Death is permanent. There is no quest chain directing your next move and no minimap or navigation markers to follow. Cool Edition packages the Chernarus countryside and Livonia forests with Frostline's frozen Sakhal archipelago. The Nintendo Switch 2 edition supports touchscreen inventory management. Play requires a persistent online connection and a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership.

8.1 / 10Nintendo Switch 2

Best aligned with players who want to set their own survival goals and accept consequential uncertainty.

For players who enjoy reading a landscape and managing supplies, the absence of quest guidance can make ordinary decisions matter. Permanent death and unpredictable survivor encounters may add tension, but demand a tolerance for setbacks rather than a guaranteed route forward.

Strengths

  • Environmental observation and bodily needs can give scavenging decisions a practical purpose beyond collecting more equipment.
  • The contrasting countryside, forest and frozen-island settings offer different survival contexts within the bundle.

Weaknesses

  • Players who rely on objective lists or navigation markers may find it difficult to decide where to go next.

Who it is for: Self-directed survival players comfortable with permanent death and uncertain encounters with others.

Play notes: Online-only play requires an internet connection and paid Nintendo Switch Online membership; there is no offline play option.
