About this game

BRAVELY DEFAULT II follows a new cast on a journey across Excillant to recover stolen Crystals. You direct the party in command-based battles, using Default to defend and bank BP, then Brave to spend it on additional actions. Borrow too aggressively and a character can be left unable to act on the following turn. Defeating Asterisk holders unlocks new jobs. Each character can pair a main job with a sub-job, bringing their abilities together, while experience in a job increases its benefits. Party preparation therefore develops alongside the search for the Crystals: acquiring a job gives you another combination to consider, and each battle asks when to commit those abilities. A yellow world-map marker points towards the next story objective.

7.7 / 10Nintendo Switch

A strong conceptual fit for players who enjoy building a party and weighing the cost of acting now.

Main and sub-job combinations can make preparation a substantial part of the appeal, while BP links immediate opportunities to future vulnerability. Players who enjoy revising a party's options may find new Asterisks more interesting than a simple increase in strength.

Strengths

  • Job pairings can turn a newly acquired Asterisk into a reason to reconsider a character's role.
  • Saving and spending BP gives defensive turns a purpose within a longer attack plan.

Weaknesses

  • Players who favour constant aggression may find the lost action after excessive borrowing restrictive.

Who it is for: Players who enjoy command battles, character builds and choosing when a party should hold back or commit.

Play notes: Borrowing into negative BP can leave a character unable to act on the following turn.
