About this game

SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech puts a three-character party into turn-based card battles. Your starting hand is drawn randomly from a deck, and the three cards you select on a turn determine the party's actions. Choose three consecutive cards belonging to the same character and a Hero Chain adds a special card; its effect changes with that character's equipped weapon. Building, crafting and upgrading the party's decks develops the cards available for battle. Choosing actions therefore involves both the hand in front of you and the deck prepared for the encounter. The adventure unfolds in a hand-drawn world that combines traditional fantasy with steampunk robots, bringing a mechanical cast into a fantasy quest.

8.0 / 10Nintendo Switch

A considered fit for players who enjoy planning a party through cards and equipment.

Hero Chains can make concentrating a turn on one character tempting, while the three-card allowance gives that choice a clear opportunity cost. Deck upgrades and weapon-dependent bonuses could appeal to players who enjoy preparing combinations before choosing actions from a dealt hand.

Strengths

  • Weapon-dependent chain bonuses could give equipment choices a role in planning card sequences.
  • Deck construction and upgrades offer a clear avenue for players who enjoy revising their battle plans.

Weaknesses

  • Players who prefer freely selecting any party action may dislike working from a randomly dealt hand.

Who it is for: Players interested in party RPGs who enjoy deck preparation and deciding whether to concentrate a turn on one character.

Play notes: Pursuing a same-character Hero Chain uses all three card selections for that turn, a tradeoff to consider against spreading actions across the party.
