About this game

Splatoon 3 makes ink both a weapon and a route through the arena. In Turf War, two teams of four compete to cover the most ground in their color. Swim through your own ink to cross the floor, climb inked walls and replenish your supply, switching between laying down ink and moving through it. Battle rewards buy weapons and gear in Splatsville, where clothing changes your appearance and provides useful abilities. Beyond Turf War, Salmon Run has a four-player crew cooperate against waves of Salmonids. The single-player story follows Agent 3 into Alterna to fight Octarians. Multiplayer requires each participant to have a system and a copy of the game; split-screen play is unavailable.

9.1 / 10Nintendo Switch

For team players who enjoy shaping the battlefield as much as aiming.

Because painted ground is both territory and a movement route, helping the team can involve opening paths as well as confronting opponents. Salmon Run and the solo story offer different contexts for the ink mechanics, which may appeal if you want more than direct competition.

Strengths

  • Linking coverage, movement and replenishment can make positioning as consequential as firing.
  • Competitive territory battles, cooperative waves and a solo story provide distinct ways to engage with the game.

Weaknesses

  • The separate-system requirement makes an impromptu gathering less convenient for groups hoping to share one screen.

Who it is for: Players who like team objectives, spatial planning and choosing equipment for both function and appearance.

Play notes: Every multiplayer participant needs a system and game copy; online play additionally requires a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership.

Planning multiplayer requires separate systems and copies, so the setup is better suited to a prepared group than a shared-screen gathering.
