About this game

Choose Sonic, Tails, Knuckles or Amy and work through side-scrolling stages with jumping spin attacks and spin dashes. Their individual movement abilities add different ways to approach a route: Tails can fly for a limited time, while Knuckles can glide into walls and climb them. The main stages can also be played cooperatively with up to four players offline. Collect Chaos Emeralds in special stages to unlock Emerald Powers. These abilities include duplicates, waterfall climbing and aerial dashes, adding tools for attacking and exploring. Powers have an activation period, and passing a checkpoint lets you activate them again after that period ends. The game pairs this side-scrolling action with 3D graphics, while character choice and acquired powers shape how you tackle each stage.

Collected in series

Sonic the Hedgehog is SEGA’s action franchise starring its speedy blue hero. Running, jumping and learning the terrain connect adventures that range from side-scrolling courses to 3D stages and open islands, with different entries giving speed and exploration their own balance.

7.6 / 10Nintendo Switch

Suited to players who enjoy choosing movement tools as well as navigating a platforming route.

If experimenting with traversal is part of the appeal, character abilities and Emerald Powers offer different answers to movement challenges. Their limited activation periods can make choosing when to use a power part of the route, rather than an unrestricted replacement for normal movement.

Strengths

  • Flight and gliding give character selection a concrete connection to traversal preferences.
  • Collectible Emerald Powers add attack and exploration options beyond the shared spin actions.

Weaknesses

  • Players wanting uninterrupted access to a favorite Emerald Power may find its activation period and checkpoint renewal restrictive.

Who it is for: Players who enjoy side-scrolling movement, exploring with different abilities or tackling stages with nearby friends.

Play notes: Main-stage cooperative play is offline; Emerald Powers become available by collecting Chaos Emeralds in special stages.
