About this game
Misako and Kyoko set out to rescue Kunio and Riki in a beat-'em-up that combines street fights with character growth. Chain quick attacks, finish with a heavier blow or spend the special gauge on a special move. Some defeated enemies beg for mercy; recruiting them brings their assists into later fights. City regions contain shops and side quests. Levelling improves your abilities and can open new moves, while money also buys items and techniques. You can play with a local partner and choose whether attacks can hurt each other. Pixel-art action is accompanied by manga panels and animated story scenes as the rescue unfolds.
Collected in series
River City is part of the Kunio-kun family of schoolyard brawls, comic rivalries and unruly sports games. Its street-fighting adventures let you punch, kick and grab weapons, with several entries adding shops and new moves to learn between fights.

Nintendo SwitchAI review
AI reviews are subjective assessments, not player ratings. See each review for its evidence and limitations.Published date:
A good conceptual fit for brawler fans who want their fighting options to grow with the journey.
Quick attacks, heavier finishers and gauge-based specials give each encounter different commitments. Shops, levelling and recruited assists add reasons to think about how your character develops between fights.
Strengths
- New moves and recruitable assists can broaden the decisions available beyond the basic attack chain.
- Local cooperation with optional partner damage lets a pair choose how carefully to coordinate their attacks.
Weaknesses
- Players seeking an uninterrupted arcade run may be less interested in the shopping and character-growth layer.
Who it is for: Players who enjoy learning combos, developing a character and sharing a local beat-'em-up with a friend.
Play notes: Enabling partner damage makes attack placement matter to your teammate as well as to enemies.
