About this game

As Amaterasu, a sun goddess in white-wolf form, you journey to restore life to Nippon. Fight with Divine Instruments whose behavior changes between main and sub equipment, and use Celestial Brush techniques to act on enemies and the landscape. Drawing a circle around a withered tree's branches makes it bloom; restoring Guardian Saplings can also open paths onward. The sumi-e visual style makes the world resemble an ink painting, while the brush is an active part of the adventure. This edition supports drawing directly on the touchscreen in handheld mode or using Joy-Con gyro controls in TV and tabletop modes.

8.7 / 10Nintendo Switch

An appealing design for players who want drawing to do practical work inside an action adventure.

The brush connects the act of making a mark with fighting and restoring the world, which may make its art style feel integral to play. Main and sub weapon behavior adds a separate equipment choice for players who enjoy varying their approach to combat.

Strengths

  • Brush actions may give restoring the landscape a more personal quality than simply activating a switch.
  • Equipment-slot differences can reward curiosity about how to combine weapons.

Who it is for: Players interested in illustrated worlds, hands-on restoration and an adventure that combines drawing with combat choices.

Play notes: Touchscreen brush input is supported in handheld mode; Joy-Con gyro drawing is supported in TV and tabletop modes.

Using the brush both against enemies and to restore the land may make drawing feel like a recurring way of acting rather than an isolated activity.

Adjustable gyro sensitivity and left-or-right Joy-Con selection offer ways to tailor drawing input, though they do not prove recognition accuracy.
