About this game

Kirby Star Allies builds its platforming adventure around the allies you recruit. Throw friend hearts at enemies to bring up to three onto your team, then combine their abilities with Kirby's Copy Ability. Your group moves through paths and confronts bosses, using its combined powers on enemies and mechanisms along the way. The combinations have concrete effects: Fire and Sword produce a flaming blade, while Stone and Ice turn a character into a curling stone that breaks through walls. Changing the team changes the powers available for the next obstacle. Friends can control the allies on the same system, and an installed content update also adds Heroes in Another Dimension after Story Mode is cleared.

8.1 / 10Nintendo Switch

A team-building platform adventure for players who enjoy experimenting with shared powers.

Recruitment makes the party itself part of solving the next obstacle, which may appeal more than sticking to a single moveset. The same ability combinations also give local partners a reason to coordinate attacks and mechanisms.

Strengths

  • Fire-and-sword and stone-and-ice combinations give experimentation a concrete purpose.
  • Recruitable allies provide a natural way for local partners to take part in the adventure.

Who it is for: Players who like changing abilities to handle obstacles, and groups interested in cooperating on one screen.

Play notes: Shared play uses TV or tabletop mode with a controller for each participant; handheld mode is solo.
