About this game

Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless combines grid-based battles with character development in the Japanese-inspired demonic realm of Hinomoto. You prepare at a base, choose a map and advance through battles and story events. Positioning includes lifting and throwing other characters across the battlefield, while Jumbification lets an enlarged fighter attack several enemies at once. More development systems become available as the story and battles advance. Reincarnation lets characters carry learned techniques and some statistics into a fresh start, but returns their level to one. Building a team therefore involves both decisions on the current map and choices about which characters to develop again for the battles ahead.

Collected in series

Disgaea turns the Netherworld into a stage for comic demon stories and squad-based strategy RPG battles. Positioning allies, combining attacks and developing characters and equipment all matter, with lifting and throwing opening up playful ways to rearrange the battlefield.

8.1 / 10Nintendo Switch

Best suited to players who enjoy reshaping both a battlefield and the characters fighting on it.

Throwing units and enlarging fighters give positioning more possibilities than ordinary movement alone. Reincarnation adds a longer-term project for players who enjoy revisiting a character's development.

Strengths

  • Lifting and throwing can make battlefield positioning a flexible planning tool.
  • Retained techniques give reincarnation a purpose beyond simply starting a character over.

Weaknesses

  • Returning to level one may feel repetitive if renewed character growth is not part of the appeal.

Who it is for: Tactical RPG players who like experimenting with placement and investing in character development.

Play notes: Reincarnation preserves selected development but resets the character's level to one.
