About this game
Bloody Roar 4 is a PlayStation 2 fighting game centered on combat encounters, move inputs, and offense-defense reads. Short bouts use character differences and rising difficulty for variety, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Animation, hit feedback, and readable arenas create match tension, while 3D scenes, streamed data, cinematics, surround audio, and interlaced television output need to preserve action and state readability together. The genre-specific limitation is that button mapping, move recognition, multiplayer accessories, and cpu behavior can affect balance. Platform conditions also include DVD loading, the 8MB Memory Card, analog sticks and pressure-sensitive buttons, Multitap, Network Adapter, dedicated peripherals, and retired online services affect present-day use. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.
Collected in series
Bloody Roar is a 3D fighting series where human combatants transform into animal-like beasts. Punches, kicks and defensive reads lead into a second set of attacks in beast form, making the moment you transform part of the contest.

PlayStation 2AI review
AI reviews are subjective assessments, not player ratings. See each review for its evidence and limitations.Published date:
Easy local beast fights outshine weak career progression.
Bloody Roar 4 keeps the series’ readily understood, fast animal-form fighting on PS2. Eighteen characters can shift between human and beast forms immediately, and the two forms now have separate life bars. This gives switching and survival a different rhythm, while counters and guard-breaking moves broaden the move list. Yet quick damaging chains are usually easier than thoughtful defence, and some beast forms are disproportionately strong. A new gridlike career mode awards DNA points for upgrades, but weak computer opposition gives little reason to build a formidable character. Casual local matches consequently offer more appeal than the solo progression. Character models and arenas look attractive, while awkward English dialogue, forgettable sound and an incongruous blood effect weaken the overall tone. The direct PS2 review identifies responsive controls and mostly smooth movement, but also noticeable slowdowns in some situations. Both observations belong to the original console release; one cannot erase the other. The game suits friends seeking low-friction spectacle, not players who expect demanding single-player development or consistently balanced competitive systems. It is separate from Xbox Extreme and earlier entries.
Strengths
- Eighteen fighters, dual health bars and responsive input.
Weaknesses
- Weak AI, beast imbalance and occasional slowdown.
Who it is for: Players seeking casual local beast-form matches.
Play notes: Original 2003 PS2 fourth entry, not Xbox Extreme.
