About this game

Blasphemous follows the Penitent One through Cvstodia, a gothic land afflicted by the Miracle. You cross platforms and fight enemies with the sword Mea Culpa, using a timed parry to stagger a foe before counterattacking. New sword combinations and special moves expand the attacks available as you progress. Exploration follows a nonlinear map rather than a fixed sequence of stages. Key items open areas and secrets, while shortcuts, hubs and warp points connect your travels. Equipment adds another layer of choice: sword hearts change Mea Culpa's attributes, and combinations of rosary beads, prayers and other equipment supply abilities or stat changes. Progress involves opening routes and developing your available combat tools alongside the journey through this cursed world.

8.7 / 10Nintendo Switch

A considered fit for players who enjoy defensive timing and finding their own way through a connected world.

Parrying into a counterattack gives observation a concrete combat payoff, while item-gated routes make exploration part of progression. Equipment combinations offer another way to approach encounters, so the design should appeal to players who like adjusting their tools as well as their timing.

Strengths

  • The parry-to-counterattack relationship can make learning an enemy's opening a satisfying objective.
  • Route discoveries and equipment changes can give exploration both navigational and combat value.

Weaknesses

  • Players who want a prescribed route may find the nonlinear structure and key-item requirements less immediately directed.

Who it is for: Players who enjoy reading attacks, experimenting with equipment and investigating routes in a gothic action-platformer.

Play notes: Frequent blood splatter and dismemberment are part of the combat presentation.
