About this game
Adol and Karja’s journey combines island exploration with a combat system built around changing how you control the pair. Fight as either character individually, or bring them together in combination mode, exchanging movement speed for guarding. Between expeditions on land, steer the Sandras through Obelia Gulf and follow information from towns and sea charts to investigate other islands. Proud Nordics adds a storyline on Öland Island featuring Canute and Astrid. Mana Hold lets you lift and launch large rocks during dungeon exploration or combat, while special sea battles unlock faster wind routes for the ship. The Muspelheim endgame dungeon introduces another objective: making progress within a limited activity time.
Collected in series
Ys is Falcom’s action RPG series of unfamiliar lands, ancient mysteries and fast-moving battles. Most adventures follow the red-haired Adol as he meets new companions and uncovers the history beneath a place’s troubles. Combat changes between entries, but exploring a new region and moving confidently through danger remain central pleasures.

Nintendo Switch 2AI review
AI reviews are subjective assessments, not player ratings. See each review for its evidence and limitations.Published date:
A good conceptual match for action players who enjoy balancing mobility with defence between exploratory voyages.
The movement-versus-guarding tradeoff gives mode switching a practical purpose beyond changing attacks. Sailing and the added island story broaden the journey, while Muspelheim offers a separate focus for players attracted to time pressure.
Strengths
- Distinct control modes can reward attention to positioning and defensive needs.
- Ship exploration gives the island setting an active role in choosing where to go.
Weaknesses
- Players who value constant mobility may find combination mode’s slower movement a restrictive tradeoff.
Who it is for: Players drawn to paired action combat, chart-led exploration and optional goals involving time pressure.
Play notes: Combination mode controls two characters within a single-player game; it is not a two-player mode.
