About this game

Wario and his colleagues are trapped inside their latest game, and clearing microgames is their way out. Read each brief instruction, work out what needs changing on screen and act with the character you control. Wario can hover and dash into objects; 9-Volt keeps skating while sending his yo-yo upward. The objective and the character's abilities must be considered together. Story Mode unlocks more characters and modes as you progress. Play it alone or cooperate with another player on the same system or through local wireless. Variety Pack adds games for groups on one system. Across these challenges, the basic inputs remain a stick and one button, while tasks range from assembling a robot to removing a statue's armpit hair.

8.6 / 10Nintendo Switch

Best suited to players who enjoy adapting a familiar task to an unfamiliar character.

The character is part of the puzzle: a forward dash and an upward yo-yo demand different solutions. That can make repeated objectives interesting for quick-thinking players, while local cooperation offers a shared way to tackle the rapid instructions.

Strengths

  • Contrasting movement and attack rules can make learning the cast as important as recognizing the microgame.
  • Local Story Mode cooperation gives a pair a shared progression through the microgames.

Weaknesses

  • Players who want time to study a new character may find rapid instructions and changing abilities demanding.

Who it is for: Players who like short reaction challenges, absurd situations and adapting their approach with a nearby partner.

Play notes: Cooperative and competitive multiplayer are not available online.

The contrast between Wario's dash and 9-Volt's upward attack can turn character knowledge into a practical part of solving each task.

Everyday tasks pushed into absurdity, such as plucking a statue's hair, are likely to appeal more to fans of visual silliness than restrained comedy.

A stick and one button keep the input vocabulary compact, so learning can focus on what each character does with those inputs.
