About this game

The Rumble Fish 2 is a 2D fighter built around five-button controls and separate resources for offense and defense. Landing attacks or making an opponent block builds the offense gauge, which powers attacking techniques. Blocking fills the defense gauge, which also grows slowly over time and pays for defensive techniques. Each exchange therefore involves both fighting the opponent and deciding how to use those resources. The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition adds Team Battle: choose three characters to face an opposing team, offline or online. Training mode includes recording and playback, providing tools for practicing situations before returning to matches. Online crossplay connects this edition with Nintendo Switch players. Its character animation uses Smooth Model Animation, a system that animates individual limbs within 2D sprites.

7.6 / 10Nintendo Switch 2

A fit for fighting-game players who enjoy managing separate attacking and defensive resources.

Separate gauges could make pressure and defense feed distinct decisions instead of competing for one shared resource. Team Battle adds a reason to learn several characters, while recording and playback offer a way to practice chosen situations.

Strengths

  • Different ways of building the two gauges could reward paying attention to both attacking pressure and defensive opportunities.
  • Training recordings could help players turn a troublesome situation into a focused practice task.

Weaknesses

  • Tracking separate resources while fighting may demand more attention than players seeking a simpler resource system want to give.

Who it is for: Players interested in resource decisions, learning multiple fighters and practicing match situations deliberately.

Play notes: Online play requires an internet connection and paid Nintendo Switch Online membership; the documented crossplay pairing is with Nintendo Switch.
