About this game

System Shock puts you inside Citadel Station, where the artificial intelligence SHODAN has turned the crew into cyborgs and mutants. Explore and fight through the station in first person to stop her. Progress also involves entering cyberspace: hacking there opens other routes, connecting digital incursions with movement through the station. The remake unfolds its story nonlinearly and uses a retro-futuristic visual design, with SHODAN’s original voice actor returning. On Nintendo Switch 2, the v2.1 update documents Joy-Con mouse controls for gameplay and menus. It also lowers music and sound effects while audio logs play, giving those recordings their own place in the sound mix.

8.2 / 10Nintendo Switch 2

Suited to players who want discovery and hacking woven into a first-person confrontation.

Cyberspace has a concrete relationship with station exploration because hacking opens routes. Combined with the nonlinear story, that structure could appeal to players who enjoy piecing an adventure together through their own movement.

Strengths

  • Hacking that changes available routes gives the digital sections a purpose beyond a change of scenery.
  • A nonlinear story structure offers an alternative to following a strictly ordered narrative.

Weaknesses

  • Players seeking a tightly ordered story may prefer a more linear structure.

Who it is for: Science-fiction players who enjoy first-person combat, route discovery and a story assembled through nonlinear exploration.
