About this game

Choose a historical leader and build a civilization through a sequence of turns. Explore unfamiliar land, establish cities, improve their surroundings and construct districts that extend urban development across the map. Leaders bring distinctive abilities, units and infrastructure, while scientific advancement, military power and cultural influence offer different directions for your plans. Research also responds to what you do in the world: exploration and development can unlock boosts that accelerate progress. Relations with other civilizations change over time, bringing alliances and negotiations into the same campaign as territorial expansion. Deciding how to develop your cities therefore sits alongside choosing a victory approach and responding to neighboring powers.

A fit for planners who enjoy connecting city growth with a civilization’s long-term direction.

District construction and research boosts give local development a role in larger plans. Multiple victory approaches and changing diplomacy may appeal to players who enjoy revising a strategy as their empire develops.

Strengths

  • City expansion gives territorial development a concrete place in strategic planning.
  • Different victory approaches leave room to build a plan around a preferred leader’s specialties.

Weaknesses

  • Balancing development, research and diplomacy may feel demanding if you prefer a single, tightly bounded tactical problem.

Who it is for: Players interested in historical strategy, city development and decisions whose value depends on a longer campaign.
