About this game

Quake puts you behind Ranger's weapons as you fight through military bases, castles, lava-filled dungeons and gothic cathedrals. The base campaign sends you in search of four magic runes. This is the enhanced version of the original game, with dynamic and colored lighting and its original Trent Reznor soundtrack. Beyond that campaign, the package includes Scourge of Armagon, Dissolution of Eternity, Dimension of the Past and Dimension of the Machine. Dawn of the Machine is also available through a free update. Campaigns can be played cooperatively in local split-screen or online, while the Switch version offers optional Joy-Con gyro aiming. The choice of campaign and whether to fight alongside companions provide different ways to enter the same first-person combat.

9.2 / 10Nintendo Switch

A fit for players who want weapon-driven encounters within an overtly gothic campaign.

The rune hunt gives the fighting a concrete campaign objective, while the expansion selection offers further settings for that combat. Cooperative modes should particularly interest players who would rather face the monsters with company.

Strengths

  • Bundled campaigns provide several distinct starting points for players interested in Quake's shooting.
  • Local split-screen offers a practical way to make the campaign a shared activity.

Who it is for: Players drawn to first-person gunfights, gothic environments and campaigns that can be tackled with companions.

Play notes: For Dawn of the Machine online maps, the publisher advises Switch players to join crossplay sessions rather than host.

Separate included expansions give players a choice of campaign to tackle, though their inclusion alone does not establish equal length or difficulty.
