About this game

New Super Mario Bros. is a side-scrolling platform game following Mario through the Mushroom Kingdom. He pursues Bowser Jr. to rescue Princess Peach, running, jumping and stomping through enemies and terrain across eight worlds. The Mega Mushroom, Mini Mushroom and Blue Koopa Shell change his abilities, while 240 Star Coins provide hidden collection goals. Touch-screen minigames offer activities away from the main adventure. The Wii U Virtual Console edition supports one player and omits the original wireless multiplayer and DS Download Play functions.

Collected in series

Super Mario is Nintendo’s platform-adventure series, first launched in 1985. Mario and his friends leap through the Mushroom Kingdom and beyond, exploring colorful worlds and tackling playful challenges. Mushrooms, coins, pipes and surprising power-ups make every adventure full of discoveries.

New Super Mario Bros.

Secrets and collecting sustain familiar platforming, with screen-format compromises and lost multiplayer on Wii U.

New Super Mario Bros. leaves worthwhile goals inside an immediately understandable running-and-jumping adventure. Wall jumps, ledges and size changes give terrain different uses, while secret exits and Star Coins encourage another look at stages already cleared. Reaching the ending does not exhaust its exploration or movement challenges. Familiarity is also its main limitation for players who know the later games well. On Wii U, presentation needs attention: television scaling exposes chunky edges, smoothing adds blur, and underground sections that switch screens make the chosen layout particularly important. Touch minigames retain short-session appeal but lose the original multiplayer. Players looking to refine two-dimensional Mario movement and search for missed routes have clear reasons to return, provided they accept the compromises of presenting a DS game across the Wii U’s screens.

Strengths

  • Secret exits and coins reward exploration
  • Movement and transformations support mastery

Weaknesses

  • Limited novelty for experienced series players
  • Screen layouts and lost multiplayer

Who it is for: Platformer players who enjoy revisiting stages, refining movement and finding secret routes.

Play notes: Independent judgment from official Wii U information and Dave Letcavage’s May 20, 2015 North American test, not our own playtest. Model, system version and hours are undisclosed. Layout preference is a bounded observation, not a frame-rate guarantee or evidence for New Super Mario Bros. U features.

Wall jumps, ledges and size-changing abilities broaden momentum-based platforming. Clear stages leave room for both practiced movement and exploration.

Lively character animation and environmental interactions enliven a familiar kingdom. Television scaling exposes chunky edges, leaving recognizable art constrained by assets designed for a small screen.

The Wii U test finds smoothing blurry and prefers the main screen on TV with touch content on GamePad. Underground sections switch screens, making some layouts too small; formatting materially affects readability.
