About this game

Neva follows Alba and her wolf companion through a world overtaken by dark forces. You cross gaps between platforms and help the young wolf keep moving, calling to it or offering reassurance when it hesitates. The journey develops alongside the animal: the cub grows into an adult, and the relationship changes with it. As the wolf becomes more capable, Alba can direct its attacks in combat and puzzles. Traversal, encouragement and coordinated action therefore form different parts of the same journey. Distinct color palettes mark the game's levels. This is a single-player adventure; Nintendo Switch supports TV, tabletop and handheld play.

8.5 / 10Nintendo Switch

A promising match for players who want a companion relationship expressed through actions as well as story.

Calling to a hesitant cub and later directing its attacks links the wolf's growth to what the player does, which may make the changing bond more tangible. The combination of traversal and combat suits players willing to engage with danger as part of that relationship.

Strengths

  • The shift from reassuring the cub to directing its attacks gives the relationship a mechanical expression.
  • Different level palettes can help distinguish stages of the journey visually.

Weaknesses

  • Players seeking uninterrupted sightseeing may find the combat component at odds with that preference.

Who it is for: Players interested in animal companionship, platform traversal and a story whose relationship changes through shared action.
