About this game

FINAL FANTASY XIV Online places a customizable adventurer in a world of quests and party battles. Your weapon or tool determines your class, while combat roles ask different things of you: tanks hold enemy attention, healers restore companions, and melee damage dealers combine attacks with positioning. The main story structures progression, with most expansion content gated by earlier story quests. For supported progression dungeons, Duty Support supplies NPC companions instead of requiring a queue with other players. Chocobos, moogles and airships connect the journey to familiar FINAL FANTASY imagery. Even when adventuring with NPCs, the Nintendo Switch 2 game requires an internet connection.

Collected in series

Final Fantasy is a role-playing series created by Square in 1987, built around fantastical journeys, memorable characters and growing stronger together. Most numbered entries introduce their own world and cast. From crystals and magic to cities where machinery meets fantasy, each adventure offers a different view.

8.5 / 10Nintendo Switch 2

A fit for story-minded players who also enjoy learning a defined party role.

Distinct responsibilities for tanks, healers and damage dealers can make learning your contribution as important as advancing the story. NPC support offers a more independent route through supported dungeons, while story gates favor players willing to follow the narrative progression.

Strengths

  • Different combat responsibilities can give role-focused players concrete skills to develop.
  • NPC companions let supported dungeon runs serve players who prefer progressing without a player-matching queue.

Weaknesses

  • Story requirements may frustrate players whose main interest is reaching later expansion content immediately.

Who it is for: Players interested in a continuing fantasy story, role-based cooperation and an online adventure with NPC support for selected dungeons.

Play notes: Paid play needs a separate Switch 2 subscription after applicable free periods; Nintendo Switch Online is not required. The initial link between the console user profile and Square Enix account cannot be undone.

Main-story gates give progression a narrative order, which suits following the journey more than selecting later expansion activities immediately.

NPC-supported dungeon play avoids a player queue, but the required internet connection still makes it an online activity.
