About this game

Baroque is a PlayStation 2 role-playing game centered on area and route exploration, collection and development goals, and character or equipment growth. Story beats, exploration, and progression resources support a longer campaign, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Characters, world building, environments, and music carry most of the atmosphere, while 3D scenes, streamed data, cinematics, surround audio, and interlaced television output need to preserve action and state readability together. The genre-specific limitation is that dense text, menu layers, repeated battles, loading, or language dependence can slow progress. Platform conditions also include DVD loading, the 8MB Memory Card, analog sticks and pressure-sensitive buttons, Multitap, Network Adapter, dedicated peripherals, and retired online services affect present-day use. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.

Distinctive death-loop mystery with rough PS2 handling.

The PlayStation 2 remake of Baroque makes death part of learning its world. In a changing tower, players fight, equip or throw strange items, lose most progress and return to a ruined settlement where new conversations slowly explain a catastrophe and personal guilt. Moving selected items between lives gives repeated descents a purpose. Its refusal to explain much also makes that discovery costly. Similar-looking floors, basic melee and a manually managed camera can wear down patience before the layered story becomes clear. Distorted creature designs and dark ambient music are effective; low-detail rooms and expressionless faces clash with the voiced drama. Direct PS2 coverage identifies camera friction and a standard 4:3 presentation. Wii widescreen output or Remote-specific complaints are not counted as PS2 features. This is worthwhile for players who enjoy extracting clues from punishing dungeon runs, not for those who need clear objectives or agile combat.

Strengths

  • Death, items and conversations advance the mystery.

Weaknesses

  • Awkward camera, similar floors and basic melee.

Who it is for: Patient dungeon-crawler fans.

Play notes: PS2 remake only; PS3 and Wii separate.
