About this game
Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader is a PlayStation 5 adventure game centered on area and route exploration, character and object interaction, and objective or clue progression. Locations, objectives, and clues gradually open the main chapters, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Theme, character expression, and environmental clues need to support exploration together, while SSD streaming, 4K and HDR output, 3D audio, performance or quality modes, and high-density interfaces need to preserve feedback and information clarity together. The genre-specific limitation is that guidance, objective triggers, camera behavior, or dense text can create search and comprehension costs. Platform conditions also include install size, SSD space, patch version, DualSense battery life, visual mode and frame rate, online dependencies, PS VR2 requirements, and cross-generation version differences affect the current release. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.
Collected in series
Warhammer games bring Games Workshop’s fantasy and science-fiction worlds into strategy, role-playing and action. Some put you in command of armies, while others take you into close combat alongside a small team, so the experience depends strongly on the branch you choose.

PlayStation 5AI review

Rich choices and squad tactics are compromised by launch reliability.
Rogue Trader builds role-playing around ideological decisions and a coordinated party. Six-character battles combine positioning, action resources, abilities and friendly fire, while dialogue choices accumulate into consequences. Its characters and setting offer substantial material for a long campaign rather than merely a catalogue of lore. Slow battles, dense reading and limited visual character variety nevertheless demand patience. More seriously, the PS5 launch test records busy-area slowdown and failed progression triggers after combat, potentially preventing further progress. Players interested in extensive reading and tactical planning may find much to value, but those technical costs belong in this historical judgment. Later patches, expansions and the protected Switch 2 sibling are not being reassessed here.
Strengths
- Consequential ideological choices.
- Substantial squad tactics.
Weaknesses
- Slow stretches.
- Launch progression failures.
Who it is for: Players seeking lengthy role-playing and deliberate squad planning.
Play notes: December 2023 PS5 base build; later fixes and other platforms excluded.
