About this game

Wargroove 2 puts you in command of turn-based warfare across land, sea and air. Each commander has a unique Groove skill, and its tiered system lets you act sooner or wait for a stronger charge. The story unfolds through three interwoven campaign arcs. Conquest offers another structure: gold and health carry between battles, linking decisions across a run. You can also create maps, cutscenes and campaigns with the in-game editors. Cooperative and versus multiplayer support local or online battles, including asynchronous play. The battlefield and its characters are presented in pixel art.

8.5 / 10Nintendo Switch

A promising design for tacticians who enjoy ability timing and consequences that extend beyond one battle.

Using a Groove now or saving its charge creates a clear tactical tradeoff. Conquest's carried resources could make preserving an army feel as important as winning the current encounter, while the editors offer a separate outlet for designing battles.

Strengths

  • Tiered Grooves give ability timing a potentially meaningful cost of waiting.
  • The editors let scenario builders turn their own battle ideas into playable maps and campaigns.

Weaknesses

  • Players who prefer a fresh start each battle may find Conquest's carried health and gold less forgiving of mistakes.

Who it is for: Turn-based strategy players interested in commander abilities, linked battles or making their own scenarios.

Play notes: Online play requires an internet connection and a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership.
