About this game

Transistor is a science-fiction action RPG about Red, a singer who has lost her voice and acquired a mysterious talking weapon. She travels through Cloudbank as the futuristic city is gradually consumed, seeking clues to the weapon and the forces changing her surroundings. Combat combines real-time movement with Turn(), which pauses the action to queue movement and attacks for execution. Functions can serve as active abilities, upgrades to other moves or passive effects. Using the same function in different slots changes its purpose, linking preparation with decisions made during a fight.

Transistor

Inventive function combinations and a strong audiovisual identity carry a compact, linear journey.

Transistor makes a battle feel like a sequence that can be rearranged. Paused planning spends a limited bar on attacks and movement, while real-time sections demand positioning for the next exchange. Functions can attack, modify another skill or provide a passive effect, making new combinations the main reason to keep experimenting. Limiters and another playthrough extend that process, although linear spaces and withheld story context limit the rewards of exploration. Painted cityscapes and responsive music provide a distinctive atmosphere, with Red and her weapon supplying its emotional centre. On PC, selecting skills with number keys before right-clicking can feel awkward. Immediate activation, remapping and automatic input prompts help. Players interested in build experiments and mood will find more to appreciate than those seeking an expansive world or fully explained plot.

Strengths

  • Flexible function combinations
  • Distinctive art and responsive music

Weaknesses

  • Linear exploration
  • Awkward default keyboard activation

Who it is for: Players seeking a compact action-strategy game with builds to experiment with and a deliberately mysterious story.

Play notes: Independent judgment from Wes Fenlon’s May 20, 2014 PC playtest, not our own hands-on session. He reported roughly eight hours for the story and continued into another playthrough. Patch and complete test configuration are unspecified. Resolution-specific runtime observations are not universal frame-rate guarantees or evidence about current hardware. The official FAQ supplies shared game facts; its 2026 update does not establish a new playtest.

Unlocks, limiters and another playthrough sustain build experiments, while overloaded functions force adaptation. Linear spaces and limited narrative payoff make mechanical exploration the stronger reason to return.

Planning and real-time movement share a limited action budget. Active, upgrade and passive function roles make experimentation change how encounters are solved, giving the compact battles flexibility.

Painted cityscapes and responsive music give the journey a strong identity. The relationship between Red and the weapon is evocative, but withheld context can weaken the payoff of its dramatic turns.

The PC test found selecting skills with number keys before right-clicking awkward. Immediate activation, remapping and input-aware prompts reduce friction, leaving reasonable usability once the default layout is adjusted.
