About this game

Super Bomberman R revolves around moving through a grid and placing bombs to clear obstacles or defeat opponents. Power-ups change factors such as blast range, bomb capacity and movement speed. Your own bombs can hurt you too, so attacking also means leaving yourself somewhere to go. Standard Battle mode rewards the last surviving player and supports up to eight participants on one system. Story mode offers a separate progression through stages, playable alone or with a partner, with switches, keys and boss encounters among its challenges. Three-dimensional stages and voiced Story scenes frame the action, while Story difficulty can be changed from the world-selection map.

7.8 / 10Nintendo Switch

A good design match for groups who enjoy trapping rivals while risking their own escape.

Bombs threaten their owner as well as opponents, so aggressive placement invites an immediate positional tradeoff. Local Battle and cooperative Story offer different social settings for the same basic actions: outlast one another or work through stages together.

Strengths

  • Self-damaging bombs give offensive placement a defensive consequence.
  • Competitive Battle and cooperative Story support different group preferences.

Weaknesses

  • The risk from your own bombs may frustrate players who prefer attacks without self-inflicted consequences.

Who it is for: Players who enjoy spatial prediction, competitive survival or working through action stages with a partner.

Play notes: Local multiplayer needs a compatible controller per player; eight individual Joy-Con participants require the supporting game update.
