About this game
SplitSecond is a PlayStation 3 racing game centered on driving and route control, vehicle control, and route judgment. Tracks raise pressure through corners, rivals, and time targets, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Speed, track boundaries, and vehicle feedback determine driving readability, while HD 3D scenes, Blu-ray data streaming, surround audio, and cinematic presentation need to preserve action, state, and text readability together. The genre-specific limitation is that visibility, collisions, steering precision, wheel support, or loading can limit consistency. Platform conditions also include Blu-ray loading, HDD installs, system software, DualShock 3 battery life, Move accessories, resolution and frame rate, and retired online services affect present-day use. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.

PlayStation 3AI review
AI reviews are subjective assessments, not player ratings. See each review for its evidence and limitations.Published date:
A thrilling arcade racer that makes destruction a tactical choice, weakened by overly aggressive AI catch-up.
The PlayStation 3 edition of Split/Second is about more than explosions. Drifting, drafting and jumps fill a meter that can trigger an immediate trackside hazard or be saved for a route-changing collapse. That decision gives players a reason to learn each circuit as well as react quickly. Falling buildings, altered paths and race data placed near the rear of the car make the action spectacular without hiding essential information. A twelve-episode season mixes in helicopter missiles, explosive-barrel trucks and elimination events, though its reality-TV framing is more stylish than dramatic. Two PS3 play accounts find substantial event variety, but one strongly criticizes the AI's catch-up behavior: a clean lead can vanish very near the finish, weakening the reward for mastery. A corrected console capture analysis confirms that PS3 uses 2x MSAA and presents a sharper picture than Xbox 360, yet it also finds conspicuous edge shimmer and small frame-rate drops. Another PS3 reviewer did not notice meaningful slowdown, so this assessment does not portray the issue as constant. The score concerns the original offline season; historical online play is not counted as guaranteed present-day value.
Strengths
- Destruction creates timing and route decisions
- Spectacular set pieces remain readable at speed
- Varied events sustain the season
Weaknesses
- Strong AI catch-up devalues clean leads
- Reused settings and shallow show framing
- More visible PS3 edge shimmer
Who it is for: Arcade-racing players who like learning hazardous tracks and turning environmental destruction into an advantage.
Play notes: Original 2010 PS3 offline edition; later patches and current online-service status were not verified.
