About this game
NieR:Automata is a role-playing game combining action combat with character development. Humanity has been driven from Earth, and android soldiers continue a war against machine lifeforms. The experiences of 2B, 9S and A2 gradually uncover forgotten matters behind that conflict. Across different areas, players combine melee and ranged attacks and adjust weapons, skills and loadouts for enemies and bosses. Pods provide shooting, gliding and upgraded abilities. An automatic mode for beginners assists attacks and evasion. Additional challenges depend on the edition and extra content owned.
Collected in series
NieR tells intimate, unsettling stories in worlds marked by ruin. Its action RPGs combine weapon combat with unexpected changes of perspective and play style, while its mobile installment explores another side of the same universe through command-based battles.

NieR Automata
Action and changing perspective give the story force, with repetition that can test the patience needed to see those changes through.
The action becomes more interesting when its confidence is placed beside the uncertainty of the world around it. Weapons and support abilities offer ways to feel capable, while encounters invite reconsideration of what that capability is being used for. Changes in perspective interrupt familiar habits and help the journey feel less predictable. Repeated places and opponents are part of that longer structure, however, and a new interpretation does not automatically make every return equally enjoyable. The setting’s contrasting spaces and melancholy mood give those returns an identity beyond another combat assignment. The inspected post-update Steam account describes better window switching, controller cursor behaviour and continuity with an existing save. These improvements reduce distractions around the journey without changing its demands. The appeal is strongest for players willing to stay with an uneasy story through a journey that repeatedly changes how it asks to be understood.
Strengths
- Changing perspectives connect varied action with questions about the world and its inhabitants.
Weaknesses
- Revisiting places and opponents can slow the journey even when their interpretation changes.
Who it is for: Action RPG players willing to revisit a story and reconsider familiar events.
