About this game

NBA 2K25 puts basketball decisions in your hands: move the ball with passes and dribble moves, look for a shot, then switch to steals, contests, blocks and rebounds on defense. With the Joy-Con grip configuration, play calling and pick controls add another way to organize an attack alongside individual moves. The Switch edition also includes NBA players' signature moves. Beyond the on-court actions, MyCAREER offers quests and rewards, while MyTEAM lets you collect cards and field a roster against rival lineups. Play Now and MyLEAGUE are the offline options; the other modes and features require an internet connection. Controller choice also matters: the single horizontal Joy-Con layout omits some actions available with the grip configuration.

5.8 / 10Nintendo Switch

Best approached for its basketball decisions, with controller choice and online dependence central to the fit.

Passing, individual moves and play calling provide overlapping ways to approach an offense, which may suit players who want to work on both execution and team decisions. MyCAREER quests and MyTEAM collecting offer different goals, but their appeal needs to be weighed against the edition's online requirements and scheduled service closure.

Strengths

  • Play calling alongside dribbling and passing may reward an interest in organizing possessions, beyond taking the next shot.
  • Quest rewards and card collecting give players different reasons to return to basketball activities.

Weaknesses

  • Players focused on offline continuity have a narrower set of options, since only Play Now and MyLEAGUE are listed as offline modes.

Who it is for: Basketball fans willing to learn offensive and defensive inputs, particularly those interested in play calling or assembling a card-based roster.

Play notes: Multiplayer servers are scheduled to close on December 31, 2026; functions requiring those servers will then stop working.

Quests and card collection supply separate progression goals, so preference for personal tasks or roster assembly will shape which activities feel worthwhile.

Combining passing, dribbling and called plays should appeal to players who want to think about creating an opening as well as executing a shot.

NBA players' signature moves may strengthen the connection to familiar basketball identities for fans who recognize those actions.

A single horizontal Joy-Con trades away Pro Stick actions and icon passing, making the grip configuration more suitable when access to those inputs matters.
