About this game

Mortal Kombat 1 places its fighters in a reimagined universe created by Fire God Liu Kang. In matches, you choose a main fighter and select a Kameo partner separately. That partner contributes special moves, throws and defensive Breakers, adding an assist selection to the choice of whom you control. The base game includes a cinematic Story mode and Invasions, a single-player mode that connects progression challenges through an interactive map. Invasions also involves character builds and rewards for completing challenges, and requires an internet connection. Local Versus provides another way to take on an opponent; online multiplayer requires Nintendo Switch Online membership. This overview covers the base game, while Khaos Reigns is a separate expansion.

7.3 / 10Nintendo Switch

For fighting-game players interested in building a main-fighter and assist partnership.

Separate Kameo selection can make experimenting with partnerships part of learning a fighter. Story mode and Invasions offer different reasons to return to single-player combat, though Invasions' connection requirement matters if you prefer disconnected play.

Strengths

  • Assist moves and defensive Breakers can give partnership selection a role in both attacking and responding.
  • A cinematic campaign and build-based Invasions may suit players who want single-player contexts beyond individual versus bouts.

Weaknesses

  • Invasions cannot fill the role of a disconnected single-player progression mode.

Who it is for: Players who enjoy learning fighter-and-assist combinations and are comfortable with explicit violent content.

Play notes: Invasions needs internet access, online multiplayer needs Nintendo Switch Online, and the game contains blood and gore.
