About this game

BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle puts characters from BlazBlue, Persona, Under Night In-Birth and RWBY into two-on-two fights. Repeated attack inputs produce Smart Combos, while directional partner calls bring different support attacks into the exchange. You can switch to your partner even during their assist, changing which fighter you control. The Cross Gauge supports competing uses: Cross Combo coordinates both fighters' attacks, whereas Cross Burst spends the entire gauge to switch out while under attack. Away from individual matches, Tactics Mode introduces the systems and Training Mode lets you recreate situations for practice. Episode Mode follows the crossover cast through a conflict over keystones and a way home, with anime-style fighters presented against 3D backgrounds.

7.9 / 10Nintendo Switch

A promising fit for players who enjoy building a fighting partnership and deciding when to spend its shared resources.

Assists and mid-assist switches suggest room to treat a team as a connected moveset. The competing demands on the Cross Gauge should particularly interest players who enjoy weighing offensive commitment against defensive escape.

Strengths

  • Partner calls and switches offer a concrete basis for experimenting with how two fighters work together.
  • Tactics and configurable training provide useful routes from learning a rule to practising a particular situation.

Weaknesses

  • Players who prefer concentrating on one fighter may find partner timing and shared-gauge decisions an unwelcome extra layer.

Who it is for: Fighting-game players drawn to crossover pairings, assist combinations and deliberate practice.

Play notes: The base game and its 2.0 Expansion Pack are separate products; this overview does not imply that expansion content is included.
