About this game

In Hades, you play an immortal prince trying to escape the Underworld. Each attempt begins with a weapon choice, followed by battles through changing dungeon layouts and enemy encounters. Along the way, the Olympian gods offer Boons that enhance your abilities. Their appearances are random, so the combinations available depend on whom you meet rather than a fixed shopping list of powers. Defeat begins another attempt, but the Mirror of Night provides permanent upgrades for future escapes. Returning to the house also brings conversations that gradually unfold the story. Combat progress and narrative development therefore extend across repeated departures and homecomings. Hand-painted environments and an original musical score frame this cycle of choosing equipment, assembling divine powers and trying again.

9.3 / 10Nintendo Switch

A strong fit for players who enjoy adapting combat builds and letting a story develop through repeated attempts.

Random divine encounters should make weapon-and-Boon combinations an exercise in adaptation. Permanent upgrades and returning conversations may give unsuccessful escapes a purpose beyond simply repeating the combat.

Strengths

  • Choosing Boons around a starting weapon should reward experimentation with the powers actually offered.
  • House conversations may make returning after defeat feel like another point of narrative progress.

Weaknesses

  • Players who want to reproduce a particular build every time may find random divine encounters restrictive.

Who it is for: Players who enjoy action combat, changing ability combinations and stories that unfold across retries.

Play notes: Defeat still begins another escape attempt even though permanent character upgrades carry forward.
