About this game

Gungnir - Masou no Gunshin to Eiyuu Sensou is a PSP role-playing game centered on area exploration, combat and party setup, and character progression. Story beats, exploration, and progression resources support a longer campaign, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Characters, world building, environments, and music carry most of the atmosphere, while the portable widescreen, UMD streaming, compressed audio, and handheld-scale interface need to preserve targets, text, and action readability. The genre-specific limitation is that dense text, menu layers, repeated battles, loading, or language dependence can slow progress. Platform conditions also include single-nub camera control, UMD loading and noise, Memory Stick saves, battery life, regional language, ad hoc requirements, and retired online services affect present-day use. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.

7.7 / 10PlayStation Portable

Strong timing-based tactics hindered by fussy preparation menus.

Gungnir's most interesting decision is when to act, not merely which enemy to attack. The party shares opportunities while individual units recover, and captured flags expand the tactical-point resources used for interruptions and coordinated support. Terrain, ranged threats, and dangerous falls make positioning matter throughout a battle. Allies with conflicting politics add moral tension to the rebellion, even when familiar plot elements reappear. Alternative endings and carried-over equipment encourage further experiments; retries retain some progress, although reward conditions demand both speed and survival. Detailed somber battlefields and contrasting martial and melancholy music reinforce the theme. Preparation is less satisfying: equipment slots and weight limits require repeated checking, while comparisons are not sufficiently clear. It rewards patient tactical players more than anyone seeking effortless setup.

Strengths

  • Wait times, flags, and tactical points create substantial decisions.
  • Varied terrain and conflicting political motives enrich battles and story.

Weaknesses

  • Equipment comparisons are unclear, preparation is time-consuming, and some plot and battles drag.

Who it is for: For tactical players willing to study timing and manage detailed preparation.

Play notes: Original PSP, Japan 2011 and US 2012; regional battle-save parity is not assumed, and higher difficulties demand system knowledge.
