About this game

FATAL FRAME: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse follows protagonists returning to an island where their childhood memories disappeared. In this remaster, you search dim mansions and abandoned hospitals, examining suspicious objects and piecing together the past through newspapers and notes. The Camera Obscura also reveals clues hidden at particular locations. When ghosts appear, photography becomes your means of attack. Keeping a spirit in the capture area builds charge for a more damaging shot, while lock-on can hold the target at the center of the screen. Collected spirit stones strengthen camera abilities and lenses, linking your search through the island with the tools used to confront its ghosts.

A promising fit for horror players who enjoy looking closely at the very thing threatening them.

Charging photographs asks you to keep a ghost in sight, which may make observation feel exposed rather than detached. Document searches and camera upgrades should particularly appeal to players who want investigation to matter alongside combat.

Strengths

  • The camera's roles in combat and clue finding can give exploration and confrontation a coherent identity.
  • Charging shots creates a reason to judge when to photograph rather than simply press the shutter repeatedly.

Weaknesses

  • Players seeking uninterrupted combat may find the document-led investigation an unwelcome change of focus.

Who it is for: Players drawn to haunted settings, environmental clues and attacks built around sustained observation.
