About this game

FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE follows twin sisters lost in a village haunted by spirits. Explore its abandoned surroundings and use the Camera Obscura to photograph the ghosts confronting you. Combat asks you to align the camera's focus with a spirit before taking a shot; a properly focused photograph deals more damage. Different filters also serve functions in both battles and exploration. The sisters' connection has a practical role: holding Mayu's hand restores health and spirit power. Exploration opens further pieces of the story through broken spirit stones, which unlock character side stories, and the remake adds new areas to visit. Its depiction of Minakami Village places particular emphasis on light and shadow.

A distinctive prospect for horror players who want confronting a threat to involve watching and framing it.

Focused photography makes looking at a spirit part of fighting it, a design that could suit players who enjoy sustained attention under threat. Hand-holding recovery and discoverable side stories also give the sisters' journey a role beyond the next confrontation.

Strengths

  • Focus and filter functions give the camera a purpose in both confrontations and investigation.
  • Recovering resources by holding Mayu's hand can connect the relationship at the centre of the story to a concrete player action.

Who it is for: Players drawn to supernatural exploration, character backstories and combat that revolves around aiming a camera rather than simply escaping a threat.

Play notes: If you want horror built solely around exploration, the need to photograph attacking spirits may be an unwelcome demand.
