About this game

Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection brings together the HD versions of the series' first three games. Choose classes and customize skills to form a party, then explore labyrinths while marking shortcuts, gathering spots and treasure. Combat is turn-based, and powerful F.O.E. enemies appear on the map, where you can steer clear of them. Expeditions alternate with returns to town to rest, sell materials, obtain equipment and adjust your party. Difficulty can also be changed there. On Nintendo Switch, maps can be drawn with the controller or, in handheld and tabletop modes, by touch. FULL automapping records floors and walls, so you can choose how much of that cartographic work to handle manually.

7.9 / 10Nintendo Switch

For players who want preparation and recorded discoveries to be central to a dungeon adventure.

Party construction and map annotation can make progress feel like the result of accumulated planning. The town-and-labyrinth loop is likely to suit players who enjoy revising a team between expeditions, rather than expecting exploration to run without interruption.

Strengths

  • Recording shortcuts and avoiding visible threats can give navigation value beyond finding the next battle.
  • Class and skill choices give players concrete ways to shape the party they take underground.

Weaknesses

  • Frequent preparation between expeditions may feel stop-start to players who mainly want continuous forward exploration.

Who it is for: Players who enjoy turn-based decisions, class-based party design and keeping track of discoveries themselves.

Play notes: Touch mapping is unavailable in TV mode; controller mapping remains supported.
